Weekend 7th/8th December 2013

This weekend is a bumper weekend for seeing Father Christmas at the various venues across Portsmouth that he will be visiting. I’ve covered a lot of those in a previous post so I won’t repeat that information here.  Do be aware that some of the venues need to be booked in advance.

This is the week that most of the local Christmas shows open. It is probably best to book ahead if you want to see Sleeping Beauty (opening on the 9th), Jack and Beanstalk (opening on the 13th), or Aladdin (opening on the 12th).  If you want a family friendly show that isn’t a pantomime then try The Witches which opens Saturday 7th December at the Chichester Festival Theatre. Continuing with the Roald Dahl theme you could also see George’s Marvellous Medicine which opens today at The Spring in Havant.

Musical Magic at Planet Ice opens this week on the 13th December, so do book tickets this weekend.

If you already hold tickets for the Historic Dockyard, then there is a free Hunt the Presents session this weekend.  No tickets? Consider buying some as a present for the family – they last for a year and there are plenty of events throughout the year.

Crafty children can join local artists at the Square Tower on Sunday for a Christmas crafts session or if you like a good yarn, don’t forget the free storytelling session by Santa at the Groundlings also on Sunday.

Christmas Shopping

Most of us are now looking for the perfect gift and this weekend you could find something totally unique at the Preloved & Upcycled’s Xmas Craft event in Cosham on Saturday.  There is a traditional Christmas market in Chichester this weekend which continues to the 15th December. Over at Port Solent there will be a Festival of Christmas Market with over 70 boutique stalls to browse and a live nativity.

Further afield you can find the Christmas Market & Festivities weekend being held at Manor Farm & Country Park together with a Father Christmas visit and carousel.

If you are after good quality nearly new toys and clothes, then try the Little Pickles Market in Southsea on Saturday.

For those of you who haven’t got the time (or frankly, the inclination) to make a Christmas Cake then you could order one at 10% off if you order before midday on Friday 6th December from the Hampshire Cakery.

And now for something completely different…

City Museum have a Secret Egypt Exhibition at the moment. On Saturday there is a free workshop on mummification – but you will need to book as spaces are limited.

Have a good weekend.
